Take Your Career to New Heights

The 939th Rescue Wing (RQW) is an Air Force Reserve unit and is a tenant unit on the Portland Air Base located at the Portland International Airport, Portland, Oregon. The Commander of the 939 RQW is Colonel Hanferd J. Moen, Jr.

Mission

Peacetime: The primary peacetime mission of the 939 RQW is to provide equipment and trained personnel for maintaining a worldwide capability to locate and recover downed aircrew members; provide air support of manned space flight operations and aerospace hardware recovery; support international rescue efforts when directed; provide humanitarian and disaster relief operations; and conduct nation-building deployments for training.

Wartime: The primary wartime mission of the 939 RQW is to recover downed U.S. and allied crew members in a low to medium threat environment by conducting air, land and water operations both day and night. Mission tasking is normally provided by the Commander, Combat Rescue Forces, through the Air Force component Rescue Coordination Center. Combat rescue forces may also provide rescue capability to sister services and allies through joint or combined Rescue Coordination Centers. The international scope of United States' interests and commitments requires the USAF Combat Rescue forces to be rapidly deployed worldwide to support combat operations throughout the spectrum.
